Chakras store the energy of thoughts, feelings, memories, experiences, and actions. They influence and direct our present and future mindset, behaviour, emotional health, and actions. Sanskrit word Chakra translates to a wheel or disk. In yoga, meditation, and Ayurveda, this term refers to wheels of energy throughout the body. In your physical body, chakras are located in front of the spine, and act as vortices of energy or prana in your body. If these vortices are blocked, you may experience it in your physical body. The subtle body influences the physical body and our reality.

Purple coloured Sahasrara or Crown Chaka is the seventh chakra in our subtle body. It governs anatomical regions of the crown of the head.

If your Sahasrara chakra is blocked, you may be feeling confused or imbalanced; it may also manifest itself in lack of connection with the physical world and lack of focus (some call it too much meditation not enough laundry). Equally, being interested in this chakra means having an interest in a higher purpose and an elevated way of being. You are ready to let go of misunderstandings about who you are and why you are here.

This chakra is associated with Ether element – which is void, spacious. To be open and aligned in the seventh chakra is to be connected with the universal consciousness, enlightenment, wisdom, unity and knowledge of self. This energy centre is associated with the element of thought and connection to spirit.

Whilst other chakras are all related to the physical organ, this chakra is related to the mind/thought but also to the central nervous system.

According to Tantric philosophy, the seventh chakra is both a receiver and giver of energy and consciousness. It receives energy to sustain life and it gives back the personal energy to unite with the collective pool of consciousness. To open the seventh chakra, you need to work on the lower chakras and prepare yourself for this work, so best it is done over a period of time. It means connecting to yourself beyond EGO and find the true value of self and your purpose. It means going beyond the limits and transcending the ego and knowing that all of creation is interconnected at a fundamental level. It means loving all, it means gratitude, it means getting rid of the challenges such as an attachment.

And that is the real challenge. We are attached not just to our physical belongings and possessions, but also to our feelings, thoughts and people. That is in human nature.

As for “quick fixes” not sure that there are many, but as with all the chakras, affirmations are very useful.

Write down these words and say them aloud to yourself:

  • I honour my body
  • I honour myself
  • I honour and cherish my spirit
  • I honour the Divine within me
  • I hour the Universe
  • I am part of the Universe
  • I seek to understand and to learn from my life experiences
  • I listen to the wisdom of universe
  • I trust my intuition
  • I am open to letting go of my attachments
  • I live in the present moment
  • I am grateful for all the goodness in my life
  • I love and accept myself
  • I love and accept others
  • I know that all is well in my world
  • I am connected with the wisdom of the universe
  • I am at peace

Practicing ANB Pranayama (Alternative Nostril Breath or Nadi Shodhana) can stimulate the Ajna and Sahasrara chakra. Meditation and being in the now too.

In Asanas, balancing poses or going through all of the chakras (pose by pose) may have an effect in opening your Sahashara chakra. These poses will help you focus and become at peace with your body and yourself and listen to the present moment.

The colour of the seventh chakra is purple or indigo. Gems balancing this chakra are amethyst, blue topaz, lapis lazuli, aquamarine, and turquoise. See Sahasrara Chakra Mala and Wrist Wrap and other amethyst jewellery.
